On 27 February 2026, a delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan under the auspices of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin paid an official visit to the University of Reading.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading Professor Robert Van de Noort CBE, at which prospects for establishing cooperation with higher education institutions of Tajikistan were discussed.

On April 22, 2024, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Lord David Cameron.

The parties addressed the key issues of bilateral cooperation and within the framework of this meeting signed the Intergovernmental Agreement between Tajikistan and the United Kingdom on Air Services, which lays the legal foundation for establishment of direct flights between Dushanbe and London.

It is noteworthy that, this is the first visit of the UK’s Foreign Secretary to Tajikistan in the history of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On 16 March 2024, on the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London (SOAS), which is one of the most prestigious educational institutions of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a bust of the founder of Tajik-Persian verse Abu ‘Abd Allah Rudaki was unveiled in a solemn atmosphere.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Mrs Rukhshona Emomali and Vice-Chancellor of SOAS Professor Joanna Newman participated in the ceremony. H.E. Mrs Rukhshona Emomali in her speech emphasized the unique service of Rudaki in enhancing the Tajik-Persian language and founding Tajik-Persian world verse, that hence became a yardstick for science, literature and statehood in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Minor Asia, Pakistan, and India for the next centuries.

It was highlighted that the Tajik-Persian language and literature, which was formed in the time of Rudaki and gained world fame, is still enjoyed in Tajikistan, Iran, Afghanistan and other countries, and is practical for all Aryan scholars across the globe.

After bust unveiling, an academic and cultural deliberations dedicated to the life, and legacy of Abu ‘Abd Allah Rudaki was held with the participation of more than 200 guests, including the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, as well as experts from the Tajik-Persian and British think tanks, and compatriots.

As part of this cultural and academic event, concert performances by famous artists of Tajikistan took place, in which Rudaki’s works were performed.

Basically, this academic and cultural talks, which was held on the eve of the International Navruz holiday, turned into a celebration of science and culture of Tajiks and Navruz approaching in the United Kingdom, and led to a worthy presentation of the high scientific, literary, and cultural values of the Tajik nation.

Besides the abovementioned event, delegation of Tajikistan consisting of the Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mrs Lutfiya Abdulkholikzoda and President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Mr Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, who have participated in the bust unveiling ceremony, on the initiative and assistance of the Embassy held fruitful meetings with the High Education Team of the Department for Business and Trade, representatives from Persian Studies of the University of Oxford, the University of Portsmouth, and SOAS, which ranks among the top-5 best universities of oriental studies.

During the meetings, the parties discussed ways and means of strengthening and expanding effective cooperation, and in this regard signed memorandums of understanding on cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan and the abovementioned universities.

On March 30, 2023, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland the Political Dialogue between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan and the United Kingdom was held. The delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Sharaf Sheralizoda, and the delegation of the United Kingdom was headed by the Minister of State for European and North American Affairs Mr Leo Docherty.

During the dialogue, the parties discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral cooperation of the United Kingdom in the areas of politics and economics, investment and business, education and culture, water and climate, combating security challenges and threats such as terrorism and extremism, as well as drug trafficking.

 

 

 

 

Inter-parliamentary relations, cooperation within the framework of international and regional organizations, the situation in Afghanistan, the need to strengthen the borders and technical support for Tajikistan’s “green” energy projects and programs, and the importance of organizing visits of high-ranking officials from the two countries were among other issues that were discussed during this Political Dialogue.

At the end of the Political Dialogue, the heads of delegations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and agreed to continue a constructive dialogue in order to strengthen ties in areas of mutual interest.

On March 28-29, 2023, on the initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and with the support of the Government of the country, the Investment and Development Forum of Tajikistan was held in London.

This Forum, which was held for the first time in the history of bilateral relations between Tajikistan and the UK, was attended by a wide range of participants – in total more than 250 people from among the heads and representatives of ministries and departments of the country, businessmen and investors, heads and representatives of eminent companies and corporations of the world.

The delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan at this Forum was represented at the head of the Chairman of the Committee on Investments and State Property Management Sadi Qodirzoda and with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture Qurbon Hakimzoda, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma, the Minister of Industry and New Technologies Sherali Kabir and the Chairman of the Tajikistan National Bank Hokim Kholiqzoda, as well as deputy ministers of foreign affairs, transport, finance and other relevant ministries of the country.

The purpose of this Forum was to strengthen and develop economic and investment cooperation through the creation of an open dialogue between businessmen and investors and, on this basis, to find new practical ways to create joint ventures.

Within the framework of the Forum, which consisted of several plenary and thematic sessions, bilateral meetings of official delegations and businessmen took place in the “Business to Business (B2B)” and “Business to Government (B2G)” formats.

Within the framework of this Forum, in order to present the export potential of the Republic of Tajikistan, an exhibition of Tajik products was also organized, where the sectors of industry, mining, agriculture, tourism and banking services were presented. During the exhibition, foreign businessmen were provided with detailed information about the investment climate and investment opportunities in these sectors of the economy, as well as specific investment projects for their further consideration.

As a result of meetings and negotiations between members of official delegations and businessmen of the two countries and private enterprises, 23 new cooperation documents were signed with a total budget of more than 370 million US dollars.

 

 

 

At the end of the Tajikistan Investment and Development Forum to celebrate the International Holiday of Navruz, with the participation of the guests of the Forum and the heads of missions of the diplomatic corps of London, a cultural and entertainment program was organized, during which famous and talented performers of the country performed and presented the high culture of the Tajik people, pleased the guests with their performances.

It is expected that this Forum will contribute to the presentation of export potential, attracting more investments and importing new technologies in the future, as well as strengthening bilateral relations between Tajikistan and the UK in the areas of economics and investment.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with James Cleverly, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, who is in Astana on an official visit.

During the meeting, the sides discussed prospects for further strengthening bilateral cooperation in political, trade, economic, investment and humanitarian fields.

Welcoming the UK top diplomat, the Head of State noted that his visit is significant in terms of further development of cooperation between both countries. Moreover, the visit is an important event at the regional scale.

“Your visit will give a very strong impetus to further enhance mutual cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UK. I took note of your recent speech at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office that outlined the long-term vision for British foreign policy. Indeed, it is a very important speech,” the Head of State said.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted the growing positive dynamics of bilateral relations.

“I would like to assess our mutual cooperation as very successful, particularly in the economic sphere and the political domain. We need to make additional efforts to push forward this very positive direction in our mutual cooperation”, the President said.

 

 

 

 

During the conversation, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev conveyed his best regards to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. He also invited the British leader to visit our country at any time convenient for him, which would be a good opportunity to discuss several issues of strengthening bilateral ties.

In turn, James Cleverly noted the positive dynamics of relations between Astana and London. He said the United Kingdom positively assesses the ongoing political reforms in Kazakhstan.

“Your country is the UK’s primary trading partner in the region. We are finding good opportunities to work together on the economic growth plans that you have. And the regulatory and tax reform agenda that you have put in place is one that I think will help boost our economic relationship,” James Cleverly said.

During the talks, the parties also exchanged views on topical issues of the regional and international agenda.
